Deal Me In!

Written by Jim Mathis

Most sales transactions are based on negotiations, but we don’t always realize it.  You can negotiate more than you realize if you apply simple skills and want the deal done on your terms.  Concentrate on the best deal and you will be more skillful in negotiating.

Most of the time if you use good skills in the right arena, it can be fun!  Trust me there is no better feeling than getting what you want for much less.  An effective negotiator can always...

Running Yourself OUT of Business

Written by Jim Mathis

What do you fear MOST that someone will do to steal your customers and clients away?  In what ways are you avoiding serving people that makes you vulnerable to an attack from a competitor?

What if you could run yourself out of the traditional business you have been in and reinvent it?  You would get a jump ahead of...

A Bridge Too Far

In marketing you can forge ahead with your ambitious plan and think the world will follow along.  But often you are so far ahead of your tribe or organization that they can’t follow you.  John Maxwell said that if you are too far out...

Tablets Changing Restaurants

Written by Jim Mathis

Are You Streaming?

Our family dined at a Chili's restaurant on a trip to Orlando last month.  To our surprise, the server told us we could order dessert and pay for our meal without even talking with her.  At each table was a tablet device for patrons to order, pay and play games on the device.

Many restaurants are installing these devices.  At dining locations in airports all over the world more to offer table-side ordering.  You can even check on your flight status and get reminders when it is time to board.

How is this affecting...

What is "EBaying" You?

Written by Jim Mathis

Are You Streaming?

EBay has changed the way we shop online for both new and used items.  They are bigger than the neighborhood yard sale, appliance, electronic or sporting goods store.  It’s a movement that is trending more all the time.

Just One More!

Written by Jim Mathis

Diligence Pays Off

I am a firm believer that you cannot motivate other people.  Everyone is self-motivated only.  So you have to be diligent in doing your job particularly when it comes to sales.  I have said many times before and heard it for years, “Apathetic sales people have hungry children.”

If you quit when you are tired or on a losing streak, you have...

What Gets Rewarded Gets Done, But...

Written by Jim Mathis

What is Modeled Gets Done Better!

You have to reward the behavior and performance you want.  Change your strategy and it will change your performance.  If you want better performance, ask people to do the tasks and obligations that result in performance.  Don't expect real change from the mere motions people go through.

John E. Jones said, “What gets measured gets done, what gets measured and fed back gets done well, what gets rewarded gets repeated.”  So the tasks you decide...

The Shack Attack

Written by Jim Mathis

Radio Shack is closing many outlets across North America.  A February 1991 sales flyer  listed items that were “must-haves,” including:  calculator, weather radio, alarm clock, pager telephone, answering machine, stereo headphones, video camera, tape recorder, camera, mobile cellular phone, global watch and computer.

Who would have thought that all of these devices would one day be given to you...

Chicken Wars

You Decide Who Wins

Vanessa Wong wrote in Businessweek, “The days when fried chicken was synonymous with a certain white-haired southern gentleman are over, at least in the U.S. A new champion has claimed KFC's long-held chicken retail crown:Chick-Fil-A.”

CFA has only about 1,780 retail outlets while Kentucky Fried Chicken dwarfs them with almost 4,500.

But CFA is beating KFC by...

Movie theaters are trying desperately to recover customer attendance.  Even though Disney’s “Frozen” was named the best and most popular animated film of all time, many people chose to wait on it to come out on DVD.  Why?  Movies cost a lot… not to mention the refreshments.

Netflix and Redbox have forever...

McDonald's Needs Reinventing

Written by Jim Mathis

Customers Demand... Service

Fresh off the news that a young woman was fired by McDonald's after she paid out of her pocket for a group of firefighters to eat,  I stopped by my neighborhood store.  My goal was to purchase a Medium "Micky D’s" sweet tea.  When I pulled up to the window and paid for the drink I was handed an Extra Large tea. “I only ordered a Medium,” I said.  She looked at me like I was another nuisance in her day and replied, “Look, they all cost the same thing!  Just take it!”  Then I got that look that you get when someone thinks they are smarter than you.

“Would your manager approve of you wasting food and blaming the customers for not ordering what you want them to have?”  I got that look again.

The problem is that McDonald’s seems to be...

Get By With a Little Help from Your Friends

You can’t grow without a support group who encourages and challenges you.  They “have your back.”  Frank Sinatra sang, “I did it my way,” but he had help to get to the top (Paul Anka wrote those lyrics).   Ringo Starr sang, “I get by with a little help from my friends.”  The song was written by...

You Can't Manage Time
